Armenian parliament elects Hovhannes Khachatryan as new deputy chairman of Central Bank

YEREVAN, January 19. /ARKA/.  By a vote of 65 to 5 Hovhannes Khachatryan has been elected today by Armenian MPs as new deputy head of the Central Bank of Armenia.

Khachatryan was nominated by the ruling Civil Contract party of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Speaking to MPs on January 18, Khachatryan outlined a number of key areas of his work in his new position, including digitalization of the banking and financial sector, introduction of ‘responsible’ lending, protection of consumers' interests and giving a new impetus to the development of the securities market. Khachatryan supports also the issue of digital currency by the Central Bank.

Hovhannes Khachatryan was born in 1983 in Yerevan. He is a graduate of the Economics Department of Yerevan State University. He is not affiliated with any political party.

In 2002-2008, he worked at the Statistical Department of the Central Bank of Armenia. In 2008-2020, he headed the Assets, Liabilities and Equity Department of Ameriabank. On July 23, 2020, he was elected to the Board of the Central Bank. He is also a member of the Central Bank Audit Committee. -0-
